OpenAI founder Sam Altman responded positively to the increasingly tense relationship between the two at the New York Times DealBook Summit on 12/5. Altman said that although the competition is fierce, he still respects Musk's efforts in the field of AI and does not believe that Musk would use his political influence to attack competitors. Altman said that if such an attack really exists, he emphasized that it is 'completely contrary to the American spirit'.

Musk's entry into politics, AI market impact unknown

With Trump set to return to the White House, Musk has become an important ally, appointed to co-lead the newly established government efficiency department DOGE with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, responsible for optimizing government operations. At the same time, Musk's competitors in the AI field, including Altman from OpenAI, are closely watching whether Musk's 'new identity' will impact market competition.

Altman is not worried about Musk's use of power for personal gain

In the interview, Altman said frankly, 'It is extremely contrary to the American spirit to use political advantages to suppress competitors for one's own benefit. I don't think the public will accept it, and I don't think Musk will do it either.' Altman emphasized that the core value of the American market is fair competition, and any attempt to abuse power to manipulate the market will be strongly criticized.

Musk and OpenAI have been constantly entangled, Altman: once regarded him as a great hero.

Elon Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI, but since OpenAI transformed from a non-profit organization to a for-profit company, he has expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that OpenAI has deviated from its original intention and accusing OpenAI of suppressing the development of his own AI company XAI in collaboration with Microsoft. He also claimed that Altman deceived him of over 40 million dollars and engaged in self-enrichment with Stripe.

Altman regrets this and said in an interview that the breakdown of this relationship is truly sad. He admitted, 'I have always regarded Musk as a great hero throughout my upbringing.'

XAI is developing rapidly, Altman calls it a 'formidable competitor'

Although OpenAI is still a leader in the AI field, Musk's AI company is growing at an astonishing speed. xAI not only attracts billions of dollars in investment, but also plans to establish a large data center in Tennessee, USA.

Altman expressed his respect for the rapid rise of xAI in the interview, calling it a "worthy competitor." He expressed "great admiration" for Musk's data center plan, but also revealed his regret for the current situation of the two.
