On July 24, news from Decrypt reported that two men charged with kidnapping and torturing a Bitcoin trader in New York were recently released on $1 million bail each, despite facing charges that could lead to life imprisonment. It is reported that the judge approved the bail request, considering the doubts in witness testimonies and inconsistencies in the parties' statements. Prosecutors claimed that the two had subjected the victim to two weeks of violent threats and torture in an attempt to force him to hand over his crypto assets. However, the defense argued that the victim was not under forced control. This case reflects the recent surge in "ransom attacks" in the crypto assets field, with experts calling for enhanced self-protection measures. Currently, the two defendants are required to wear electronic monitoring devices and surrender their passports while awaiting further trial.
