Jack Dorsey's Square to Introduce Bitcoin Settlement – Aiming for Expansion to All Merchants by Next Year | CoinDesk JAPAN
Jack Dorsey's Square has begun implementing Bitcoin (BTC) Settlement for merchants on its network.
Square has started onboarding initial merchants and is now able to accept Bitcoin Settlement via the Lightning Network from customers, as posted by Owen Jennings, an executive at Square's parent company Block, on X on the 22nd.
Settlement is conducted almost in real-time using the Lightning Network, which is a layer 2 of Bitcoin, and Square handles the exchange to fiat currency.
Square plans to offer this service to all merchants using its sales platform by next year.
Square trialed this system at the "Bitcoin 2025" conference held in Las Vegas in May, allowing participants to scan barcodes and make purchases with Bitcoin.
Square positions the Lightning Network as the foundational technology in its plan to accelerate the adoption of Bitcoin Settlement, which has been hindered by slow speeds.
The Lightning Network addresses this issue by building micropayment channels that can process transactions away from the main Bitcoin blockchain.
