According to news from CoinWorld, on May 22, 2025, children from the Uganda Orphan Children's Center (located in eastern Uganda and part of the Bitcoin Kampala community) took a road trip to the zoo, thanks in part to Bitcoin donations from around the world. The team that helps fund and operate the orphanage chose to make this trip on Bitcoin Pizza Day to show the orphans that anything is possible, as many of them have never left the village where the orphanage is located. Just like Laszlo Hanyecz showed the world when he bought two pizzas with 10,000 Bitcoin on May 22, 2010, it's possible to pay for goods and services with Bitcoin. 22•05•2025 – Orphanage Bitcoin Pizza Day? We dreamed of leaving our area by bus to the zoo at the end of last year, and all of you made it happen... Special thanks to @blinkbtc, @studentofbtc, and @travelwbitcoin for sponsoring our day’s trip, as well as our forever sponsor @Bitcoinbeach,... pic.twitter.com/Ol6XC52bcv "We organized this trip to bring hope to the children and open their minds to what is possible," said Brindon Mwiine, founder of Bitcoin Kampala, to Bitcoin Magazine. "Last year, we started teaching them to write their dreams in the notebooks we provided for them. When we asked them what they wanted for Christmas, their answers were simple: to visit the capital, see animals, and travel," he added. "The Bitcoin Pizza Day at Entebbe Zoo became the perfect way to make these dreams come true while teaching them about Bitcoin." Mwiine also noted that this was the children’s first time taking a long-distance bus, crossing the Nile, going through the capital Kampala, exploring the zoo - and tasting pizza. "It was a day full of firsts," Mwiine said, adding that it was even more special because he, the supporting staff, and the children "experienced it all together like family." Edith Mpumwire, a member of the Blink Wallet marketing team and a collaborator with the Bitcoin Kampala team, echoed Mwiine's sentiments. "This trip was the first for [these kids]," Mpumwire said in the video embedded in the above X post. "Most of these children come from eastern Uganda [and] they live in a small house in Bugiri. They have never left Bugiri, so for them, today is not just the first day visiting the zoo, but also the first day leaving their home," she added. Mpumwire also pointed out that the international Bitcoin community deserves some credit for facilitating the orphans' trip. "The global [Bitcoin] community contributed to their livelihoods [and] we are here taking them on a road trip [where] they can see a mini national park, Lake Victoria, and a lot of animals."
